City Hall reigns over Market Square like the great-grandfather of time. The Neo-Classical monument built in 1827 – 1835 rises to a 3-tiered 65-meter bell tower which rings the time every quarter hour.
The public may climb the 420 steps to the tower 24 hours a day and view the surrounds from 360 degrees.
City Hall’s entrance is guarded by two giant lions whose watchful eyes keep the square, a UNESCO World Heritage site, safe from harm.
The ornate Renaissance Revival icon is imposing and regal, but significant because the engineering is the 1st case of such architectural technology in Europe.
The Poltava river ran through the land planned for the Opera House and had to be filled in and re-routed to a tunnel below to give the structure a proper foundation.
It opened to the public in 1900 and remains the central jewel of Lviv.
Palazzo Bandinelli is a late-Renaissance townhouse facing Market Square. It was built in 1589 by pharmacist Jarosz Wedelsky and later bought in 1629 by Florentine merchant, Roberto Bandinelli, who later founded the first post office in eastern Galicia.
The house was completely renovated in 1737-1739 and used as a bookshop and meeting place for the local literati. It is now Lviv Historical Museum which features over 100 exhibits.
The Boim Chapel was built by the Boim family from Hungary in 1609 – 1615 as an urban cemetery and homage to their Christian orthodoxy, with detailed icon sculptures on all sides of the chapel.
The Christ figure sits in front of the Crucifix on the dome of the chapel, rising up from fluted pilasters.
Visit the chapel as you make your way to its neighboring large iconic Latin Cathedral.
The Latin Cathedral anchors the city on the busy central walkway in Lviv’s Market Square which has been its home since 1360.
Go inside and sense the splendor of the high-vaulted Cathedral and the luminous stained-glass windows.
Look around for icons decorated with silver hearts and sit in silence, listen to the voices over the years who beseeched the same higher being that we do today.
St. George’s Cathedral is one of the finest examples of Rococo church architecture in Europe. It dates to 1280 when it was a fortified monastery, and is now the 3rd manifestation of the cathedral site built in 1744 – 1760.
The imposing church grounds stand on a high terrace surrounded by gardens and fruit trees.
The facade features sculptures of the late Baroque and early Rococo sculptor, Johann Georg Pinzel, well-known throughout Europe.
This 19th century Neo-Renaissance palace on a central city street is royal for special events, concerts, or galas and dinners in the giant mirrored dining room.
Built in the 1880’s for Alfred Józef Potocki, former Minister President of Austria, the palace was among the most notable nobleman’s residences.
An art gallery on the 2nd floor features a collection of European art. Host a venue, see an exhibit, or visit for pleasure.
Originally built in 1363, and restored to its original appearance in 1908 – 1927, It has a high castle-like tower and picturesque interior spaces.
Visit colonnade-lined yards and lavish interiors with precious icons of St. Gregory and the Virgin Mary, which were brought to the site in the 1600s.
Observe the ornate domes and look for the 18th-century wooden altar. Outside you’ll see an Armenian cemetery with graves dating back to the 16th century.
